Year 9

Where learning is an experience

A life-changing year

Year 9 is a tight-knit club where strong friendships are forged. Students feel comfortable, accepted, supported and connected. Our dedicated Year 9 centres at each campus are the base from which our students explore the world around them, develop self-confidence and a deeper understanding of their place in a changing world.

Teachers are highly-skilled educators who help guide our students to achieve independence, resilience, responsibility and true empathy for others.

Values can’t be taught in the classroom, they have to be experienced.

Year 9 will help students:

Develop an independent mind and attitude

Deal with controlled risks, learn to overcome adversity and tackle challenges

Participate in social awareness programs which contribute to community, foster empathy and a service attitude

Learn teamwork and collaboration

Develop responsibility, accountability, time-management and autonomy through self-managed projects

Learn outside the classroom – ‘real world’ learning

Undertake personal development and self-discovery

Enhance communication skills

Academic program

The core academic program includes units in Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities, Personal Development, Physical Education and choice of French or Japanese. Students also choose from a broad range of electives such as Sports Coaching and Management, Forensic Science or Multimedia and Web Design.

Key features of the Year 9 are the Experiential program, Common Good, Personal Best project, Wellbeing and Self-Discovery program and the Beacon Explorers’ Great South West Walk (camp).

We care for our students and teachers demonstrate integrity and compassion. ‘Random Act of Kindness’ (where students hand out small gifts on Melbourne’s streets) is a highlight for students – or working with people experiencing homelessness. We deliver on our values.

Learning that Matters

We take our Year 9s into the local community to learn about real and relevant issues. They learn by following their passions and interests. Students create, invent and problem-solve collaboratively and as individuals. There is a strong bond between students and teachers.

Dear Beaconhills College, I was exceptionally fortunate this morning to receive a red rose from a student of yours while working in the city, with a hand written message to have a nice day and you look good. What a way to start a Friday!!
After the week I had been having, this was a joyous, spontaneous surprise and I cannot put into words the feelings I had the moment the young man handed me the rose with such confidence, respect and pride.
I must also commend his fellow students who congratulated him upon returning to the group, supporting and patting him on the back for a job well done.
Thank you for putting a massive smile on my face all day.
